Why was the Indian Act Unjust?

The Indian act was unjust due to the fact that the First Nations were not consulted on any of the laws that were made. Not only did the government not consult any of the First Nations, but even with these rights they were still very badly discriminated against. Because First Nations did not have the right to vote they did not have the freedom to express their opinions which today is considered a violation of the Fundamental Freedoms indicated under the charter. Another freedom that was violated was the right to choose their own religion. The Europeans in Canada were ethnocentric and tried to change the natives to respect, value and practice European traditions instead of their own. Children were taken to residential schools against their will and forced to learn different ways from their own.
