Effect By forcing first nations people to attend english and french schools the canadian government not only to away their rights, you can read under the rights tab, they were unjust because the first nations people were growing unhappy. They couldn't speak their own language, practice their own traditions or do basically anything they wanted while trying to be assimilated by the canadian government. This effected both views of the first nations and the governement.
By taking away their right to vote the canadian government also insured that no one of "first nation status" was allowed in any political action. If someone of first nation decent wanted to do so they would have to give up their legal identity, and all treaty rights. So basically they had to assimilate in order to gain a democratic right placed on the charter today. The effect of this was even more first nations were reluctant to assimilate and looked more towards traditional style government the first nations used already. The reason for the act was so the government could control the first nations, making this act as a way to do so. It allowed the canadian government to make rules the first nations must abide by even though no one was consulted, and to make sure they follow these rules. The effect of this was again the first nations were unwilling to assimilate and ethnocentrism took over the European individuals living amongst Canada, as well as the government. Now there was not only unjust views but that leaded to unjust decision making. |
